The Experience
What It Feels Like
Entering Deep Current is like descending into the ocean without getting wet. The space is dark, vast, and enveloping. Massive fabric structures, translucent and subtly lit from within, move in slow, choreographed undulations overhead, mimicking the motion of kelp forests and jellyfish. A 24-channel spatial audio system fills the room with deep, shifting tidal sounds: whale song, currents, the creak of pressure at depth. Projection maps bioluminescent patterns across the floor and walls, responding to visitors' movement. The experience is both deeply calming and awe-inducing, a reminder of the immensity and beauty of the world beneath the surface.
This project is currently in Fundraising stage. The experience above reflects the artist's vision for the completed work.
Origin
The Story Behind It
Amara Diallo grew up on the coast of Senegal, where the ocean was both livelihood and mythology. She learned to freedive before she learned to read, and the underwater world shaped her sense of what art could be: immersive, enveloping, and felt in the body. After studying sculpture and digital media in Paris, Amara began creating immersive environments that translated her ocean experiences for landlocked audiences. Deep Current is her most personal work: an attempt to give people who may never dive the feeling of being held by the sea, and through that feeling, to build empathy for marine ecosystems under threat.
Ambition
What We're Working Toward
- Create a 5,000+ sq ft immersive ocean environment using kinetic fabric and spatial audio
- Develop a touring-ready installation system that can adapt to different venue sizes
- Partner with marine conservation organizations to integrate educational content
- Reach 50,000+ visitors across a multi-city exhibition tour
- Raise $120,000 for fabrication and initial venue partnership
